Overview
A brush script style hand lettering composition exploring letterforms and composition, and the poetic balance and tension between control and chaos, as expressed through the spontaneous energy of the stroke. Letterforms are also combined with imagery inspired by the nighttime sky to evoke a sense of vastness and wonder.
Design Process
This project explores the balance between precision and expression through the juxtaposition of calligraphy and hand lettering, where classic tradition meets modernism. Each stroke requires technical precision and deliberate movement while still allowing for the spontaneity, rhythmic expression, and subtle variations that come from the human hand. Many of these variations are either left to be part of the unique, spontaneous energy of the final piece, or removed and redone when they detract from the unified whole. The composition was refined to achieve visual balance amongst letterforms, and the inverted colorway with subtle ink splatter texture is meant to suggest both the physicality of the medium and the broader sense of wonder inspired by the vastness of space and time.
